Crafted for you

Bespoke restorations and reimaginings, crafted exclusively for you.

Furniture with a soul - and a story to tell

Every commission begins with a story - yours. Whether it’s restoring a treasured family heirloom, reimagining a vintage find to fit your home, or creating a statement piece inspired by a particular era, we work closely with each client to bring their vision to life.

Glories of the Past offers a limited commission service for those seeking the careful restoration or considered reimagining of antique, vintage or reproduction furniture.

Each commission is approached with respect for the original piece - its proportions, materials, and history - while allowing space for thoughtful refinement, renewed function, or a subtly altered aesthetic.

Commissions may include:

  • Restoration and repair

  • Refinishing or tonal adjustment

  • Decorative reworking

  • Interior adaptations for modern use

Not every piece is suitable for alteration, and commissions are accepted selectively. Each project is discussed individually, with scope, feasibility, and direction agreed in advance.

If you are interested in commissioning work, please get in touch with details of the piece, its dimensions, photographs if available, and your intended use.

How it works

1. Consultation – We’ll discuss your piece, your style, and what you’d like to achieve. This initial stage helps determine whether the project is suitable and allows me to assess the scope of work. Once agreed, a written quote is provided before any work begins. A 50% deposit is then required to secure the commission and confirm a place in my schedule. Work begins once the deposit has been received.

2. Design Direction – Once the quote is accepted, I provide a clear design direction, which may include written notes, reference images, and suggested finishes or colour palettes.

3. Creation – Your piece is carefully restored, refined, or reworked by hand using traditional methods and quality materials. Each commission is undertaken individually, with appropriate time allowed for preparation and curing between stages.

4. Delivery – Once complete, pieces are either collected by the client or via a courier arranged by the client.

Your questions answered...

- How long does a commission take?

Timeframes vary depending on the size, condition, and complexity of the piece, as well as the type of work involved. As a general guide, most commissions take 4–8 weeks from start to completion. This allows time for proper preparation, curing between finishes, and considered detailing. More complex or heavily damaged pieces may take longer, and I will always advise if this is the case before work begins.

- Do you offer colour samples?

I’m happy to discuss colour direction and finishes in detail and can provide digital references and examples of previous work where appropriate. Physical samples are not always practical due to variations in wood, age, and surface condition, but colours are always agreed in advance before work begins.

- How do deposits & payment work?
All commission work requires a 50% deposit prior to commencement. The remaining balance is payable on completion, before collection or delivery is arranged. Deposits are non-refundable once work has begun.

All payments are made by bank transfer following receipt of a written quote or invoice. The remaining balance is payable on completion, prior to collection or delivery being arranged.

- Can you collect my furniture?

I’m unable to offer a collection service. Clients are responsible for arranging delivery to and collection from my workshop, either personally or via a courier of their choice. I’m happy to advise on access, dimensions, and suitable transport arrangements.

- Do you work with genuine antiques as well as modern/vintage/repro pieces?

Yes. I work with genuine antiques, vintage furniture, and selected modern or reproduction pieces, depending on the nature of the commission.

With antiques, work is always approached sympathetically, with respect for age, materials, and original construction. Any proposed alterations are discussed carefully before work begins.
